Seeing a lot of takes about how Kafka Hibino feels “like a teenager”/“like every other Shonen MC” but as someone rapidly approaching his age range, his portrayal feels really solid to me.
He is quick to point out what those around him are doing right. Despite trying to prove he belongs, he doesn’t let his ambition or pride interfere in his perception of his teammates. It’s a specific form of security and sincerity that only comes with life experience.
And the result is that the other members of the cast trust him.
They may rag him from time to time, but they see him as someone to admire, even though they’re vastly superior in terms of traditional Kaiju hunting. IMO, that’s not a dynamic you can create using characters in the same age range.
Kaiju No. 8 takes everything everything I love about shonen, and it puts in this manga, and it smacks you with "Believe in yourself! I believe in you!! You can do this!"
Some of the Shonen Jump idealism is simmering in that pot with maturity. Because it acknowledges your past failures, and it also pushes you forward in a healthy manner.
"And no, once you hit 30+ your life is not over, your dreams are not dead, and you're going to come out of this!! Even if no one else believes in you, I believe in you!"
The author writes empathetically. I was scrolling through the reddit and I found this:
He believes in his characters like Kafka, Kikoru, Reno, etc. The plot is wonderful. It's a wonderful read!!
I really want more people to read this manga!!

While not mentioned, Inarizaki is based in Amagasaki, Hyogo.
I remember reading this on a reddit thread.
So this person found out via the manhole covers which Furudate had traced in the chapter where Kita and Aran are walking home from school.
Apparantly, Amagasaki also has a strong boy's volleyball team.
I think it's so cool how Furudate made references to boy's highschool teams in real life across Japan.
fan-made concepts for an animated show where they just look like that (it is cancelled after one pilot)
